The scratch pad has
been tried and tested on many horses and ponies now, and we have
not had one complaint, all our horses scratch happily on their
scratch pads, choosing the new self grooming accessory over
other inappropriate hegdes, fences, posts, people...!!
Foxy our anglo arab suffers from sweet itch and has a general
love of rubbing and scratching, we do keep him in an amigo sweet
itch rug in the summer, which we love, what fox loves is his
scratch strip that we put on the fence post after he had
developed a sore under his chin from rubbing on it when he
started to moult, once the scratch strip was in place the sore
healed up and fox had a lovely scratch pad to get rid of his
winter beard on! watch the video below!
The original idea of the scratch pad
was developed 10 years ago from trying to find something to cure Cyrill's problem of rubbing his tail, mane, head, sides and
scratching himself, his worst problem was his tail, he was
literally rubbing it away on a particular old tree. I tried
various creams, rugs, brushing but nothing really seemed to stop
him rubbing.
As I thought about it more and more I thought to myself you have
an itch you scratch it with something that is just right to
scratch but not hurt... could I find something that worked for
horses?
So I started putting all sorts of things on his favourite
scratching places to see if they worked, some things were good
but not practical, others practical but useless! And then
finally I came across original premium Astroturf, I got some samples and
trialled them, and to my utter astonishment Cyrill's scratches
disappeared, hair started growing on his tail, and it started to
thicken and grow longer.
It took a while to catch him scratching on it but when I did it
was a real joy to see him enjoying a good scratch. After a
couple of months there was a real difference in his tail, and
years on I am trimming his tail and I wouldn't have him without
a scratch pad again!! When he has an itch he generally
makes the effort to go to his scratch pad... unless I am nearby
of course!!
