The solution is to give them something safe to scratch on, something tough enough to ‘hit the spot’ but not so that it causes broken skin.  Plus, if its just right, the itch can be relieved much quicker and stop the urge to rub on less suitable things like gates, fencing, trees, buildings, hedges or anything within reach

Damage from itching is a problem that affects thousands of horses every year and leaves us with frustrated horses.  The problem varies to a greater or lesser degree, from an innocent itch to full blown Sweet Itch
It would always be suggested that on a horse with severe Sweet itch, that medical attention is sought from your vet.

 

 

 

We would advise that any sweet itch, scratch, broken skin or wound on a horse should be properly treated,
relief can also be provide through regular brushing, fly rugs, sweet itch rugs, fly repellent,
soothing creams and regular baths with medicated shampoos ensuring you rinse thoroughly.

In case you were wondering...
the horse on the site is called Cyrill, he is an Irish Thoroughbred who just wont stop rubbing his tail as you can see from the photos used on this website the scratch pad has worked wonders and he loves rubbing on it from top to tail!
